Beaumaris 3-3 Bentleigh Cobras

What can only be described as a ‘ ding dong’ encounter ended all square after a controversial last-minute at Beauy Secondary College last Saturday night.

Beauy opened well with a high-pressure game forcing multiple turn-overs and culminating in a delightful goal from stand in skipper, Zach Lemke’s header after 25 minutes. Beauy continued to press and had multiple chances to increase their lead but failed to do so and almost let the Cobras strike back……. but eventually went into the break ahead.

Coach David Gibson will have advised his team that the first ten minutes of stanza two were critical to maintain a clean sheet and ideally grab a second. A nightmare start with a catastrophic misunderstanding between Marinos Panayi and goalkeeper Colby Taylor allowed the Cobra’s front man to grab an easy equaliser after just a couple of minutes , before a second for the Cobras when a long shot eluded Taylor to complete the turnaround and give the Cobra’s the lead with still 30 minutes to play.

Resilience is key in these situations and Sam Mack forced an equaliser from a great corner from Dan Rodrigues, before a’ scorpion ‘ kick from Lemke got the home side back in the lead, and a second win to stay top of the ladder was on the cards…..

In the 93rd minute a Cobra’s attacker turned and fell in the box and a penalty was awarded. Colby Taylor saved the first kick, but was adjudged to have moved of his line ! Bedlam!

Second kick was dispatched to make it 3-3…. And a point apiece.

The Bentleigh coach agreed in his post match ‘ Prez’ conference that they were glad of the draw, whilst Alistair Bray from Beauy said two points dropped ………. No doubt !
