Beauy Crowned Champs at Boys FC 2011
THE shrill of the final whistle had not long finished when Football Federation Victoria president Nick Monteleone yesterday declared next year’s BoysFC tournament would be back in Bendigo.
Monteleone was on the sidelines for yesterday’s finale to the popular two-day tournament run for seven-a-side football teams at the Epsom-Huntly Recreation Reserve.
“The BoysFC tournament has become a great success and just keeps on growing,” he said at the end of the third series.
Hundreds of players took to the pitches for matches from the under-10 up to under 15-16 age groups.
“The facilities at Epsom-Huntly are first-class,” Monteleone said.
“The support from the FFV central region clubs, in particular Epsom, is outstanding.
“The City of Greater Bendigo has also kicked in to be a great supporter of BoysFC since it began.”
On the pitch, teams from as far afield as Warrnambool, Albury-Wodonga, from across Bendigo, and metropolitan Melbourne vied for BoysFC glory.
“This tournament just keeps on growing each year,” the FFV chief said of an event which attracted hundreds of players.
“It’s fantastic to see a lot of country clubs represented, as well as from the metro zones.”
The two-day tournament also injects plenty of money into the region’s economy.
A great weekend for Beaumaris was capped by winning the under-13 and under-14 play-offs.
Storm beat Lightning in the all-Beaumaris clash for the under-13 title.
Clifton Hill’s attack was in hot form as it struck six goals in the under-11 semi-final and followed up with a 6-0 victory in the grand final.
The Shepparton-based Premier Soccer advanced to the under-10 final after beating Bendigo United by a goal.
Strathdale’s under-14 team reached the semi-finals, but was outplayed by Beaumaris, which in turn was defeated by Nunawading in the grand final.
In the under-12s, Albury-Wodonga FA Red strike three goals and kept Northcote goalless.
Geelong scored a 4-1 win against Nunawading to be the under 15-16 champions.
