Match Reports Berwick and Collingwood

The Beauy senior sides have begun a sequence of friendly games in order to trial prospective players and fine tune the coming seasons game plans.

Game 1 Berwick City

Game one was a a 'toughie' against State 2 opponents Berwick City. Replete with a squad of players rich in experience in the higher echelons of Victorian football, Berwick handed
us a lesson in possession football, and provided us with an experience our youngsters can benefit from in the upcoming season. All the points we encourage were there to be seen from this well drilled Berwick side. Possession, discipline, patience, closing space, good first touch and support as well as individual expression in offensive areas of the ground. Half time came with the boy's 3-0 in arrears.

Due to the excellent pre-season training regime our lads weathered the storm, concentrating their energies on closing space and regaining possession. The second half saw a more confident approach from our lads as they took the game to Berwick.

But in the last 15 minutes or so, as Berwick became complacent with their lead, we actually dominated and a mazy run into the area from Marcus Antonopoulos saw his low cross smacked into the net by the hard working Michael Runnalls.

Other opportunities followed but Berwick snapped out of their malaise and managed to hold us out for the remainder of the game. Berwick City 3 -1 Beaumaris.  Our reserve side also suffered a 3-1 setback whilst trialling quite a few hopefuls in an entertaining encounter.   James Thornley netting our only goal.

Game 2 Collingwood City

Darebin soccer centre was the venue for the match versus N/W Provisional side Collingwood City, who always provide splendid opposition.

At 1.00pm the reserves played their game in hot and muggy conditions, deservedly winning 2-1 after coming from behind, with goals from Jason Potts and on form Erdem Mehmet.

A welcome cooling wind heralded the commencement of the senior game, then darkness descended and enormous hailstones forced the players from the park followed by powerful winds and driving rain. But as we know, this is Melbourne and so we just waited for 10 minutes and then continued with a very absorbing and even contest.

Beaumaris took the lessons of the previous week and played patient football, however a very bouncy and slick surface demanded extreme concentration in order to play attractive football. This was where we had the 'wood' on Collingwood, who often resorted to running the ball or passing long.  Again, despite numerous breakdowns in possession play, we persisted with the passing game and midway through the 2nd half were rewarded when a fine 7 pass routine was slotted home by Gibbo to give us a 1-0 win.

Some fine individual performances during the game, but we have not gelled yet and need to up our intensity as we meet our old nemesis,  State league opponents North Caulfield next Sunday.

Coaches Pre Season message

Gentlemen,

In a very few months an exciting new challenge playing football in Provisional League 1,  awaits us.

This is a challenge we must once again meet head on,  with our preparation complete and our intentions clear.

Fighting words?   Bloody oath!

After two very successful seasons we cannot afford to be complacent, our preparation must be stepped up and our mind-set must be equipped for the higher standard of football we will encounter.

In order that we ensure our pre-season training,  which begins in mid-January, commences immediately with technical and tactical concerns rather than fitness,  we have initiated an exciting summer program dedicated to providing a solid conditioning foundation.

At no cost to you we will hold 6 weekly training sessions prior to Christmas commencing Saturday 14 November.

We have negotiated once again, the extremely accomplished services of Joe, who is the now one of the conditioning coaches for AFL/VFL club Collingwood. His sessions will encompass an interesting and very effective program which will include soccer warm up games and competitions.

The FREE sessions will be held on Saturdays at 11AM for approximately 90 minutes at the Kingston Heath parklands next to Bentleigh Greens soccer club,  Centre Dandenong Road,  Cheltenham.

An important final note.  While these sessions are not compulsory, I cannot stress enough the importance of them and how much the activities will benefit you as preparation for the pre-season.

We have already arranged 'friendly' games with such clubs as Berwick City, Peninsular Strikers and North Caulfield, and imagine how much sooner we can commence these games if our fitness is already at an advanced stage in January.
We know you all have the enthusiasm, so please show us your commitment and dedication by turning up and making the sessions meaningful and enjoyable. Runners, boots, light clothing and plenty of liquid will be essential gentlemen.

I look forward to seeing you all.

Cheers,

Bob
